Hye Kim Studio Visit

February 13th, 2010 dubsea No comments

Hye & Bo in Studio

Hye Young Kim is showing her work at Dubsea Coffee / Art Space from Feb 15 – March 15.  I recently stopped over to Hye’s and Bo’s studio to discuss her work & give you a glimpse into her studio, her work and her personal content/intent.

Is it inside out or outside in?  For Hye Young Kim her intricate process and narratives may start from the inside out. On the outside she worksfrom little moments in the world and witnessing traces of human energy.  In her awareness and observation she likes to come to a meditative moment where she meets up with her inner voice.  This is where she interacts and it all becomes inside out, like exposing a body into nakedness from an unraveling of thread.  Through her inner process she exposes inner nakedness for the viewer to witness, these momentary reflections and experiences lead to honest and beautiful imagery.

Red Meditation, Mixed Media Yarn Language

When I took a visit to her studio and saw all of her work together I imagined as if I were on a trail in a forest.  I was walking along and saw a thread tied to a tree and this thread continuously connected to the next leading the way to the next tree, or bush or interestingly shaped rock.  Following this extensive thread it seemed I would never quite make my way to its weaver but this put me into a state of self awareness, focusing on my own thread which had snagged on a tree and was unraveling my own stories in humanity in which we all share.  As I walked further the more naked I became until ultimately I was free.  I figured this is what the original thread I had followed may have led to an open field at the end of its unraveling with a being set free only leaving a recording of the path it had walked.  This thread leaves behind a trace, a trail, a narrative a mark and recordings for you to view outside in.

A stunning wall of ideas, collaborations, and pieces by the two artists

The materials and content are made of the stuff that have the potential to put you in the inner reflective space like a deep and creative conversation that make you remember what planet you live on.  Hye Young Kim has been mapping everyday life and questioning the spiritual existence of humans in contemporary society her narratives are created with the intent that understanding self-existence will help people to gain compassion and a dynamic interconnectedness to the communities in which they exist.

From the outside in or inside out?

This is going to be a great music show to come and check out at Dubsea Coffee, Free !!  Live music by Brandon Decker & Lets Get Lost .

Brandon Decker “vocals, guitar, and producer ” is on his Long Days tour from Sedona, AZ. accompanied by Nanci Mcdonald ” Cello Vocals “.  The duo will be playing his narrative work on redemption with poignant lyrics and resonating vocals.  This folk rock duo is something to witness, supremely you will not be disappointed.

Lets Get Lost is a local Seattle treat, Nick Shadel & Peter Kowalczyk frequent the cafe as they are White Center boys.  If you come to the show you’ll get to experience a flood of the groups indie-pop-rock-carnival aesthetic.  Their music is cotton candy for the ears, sweeter and bolder to the core the longer it resonates in your audible system.

Come to Dubsea Coffee and listen, witness this delectable feast for your temporal lobe.  Let your internal audiometer get the
frequencies and vibrations it deserves.

Thanks,

the Dubsea Crew!

Dubsea Double Feature! Kelda Martensen & Michael J. Olsen

January 18th, 2010 dubsea No comments

Saturday night friends, family, and community came out to welcome Kelda Martensen & Michael J. Olsen’s work into Dubsea Coffee!

This is my first curated show for Dubsea Coffee, presenting Burien WA artist Kelda Martensen and Michael J. Olsen. The two of them do phenomenal and complimentary works and offer an eclectic range of words, range of imagery and a range of sizes for the mental/visual feast.  They have blessed the walls of Dubsea with gut rumbling work giving the Greenbridge community the mental currency it deserves.  If you have a chance or are in the area it will be a well worth trip to witness the travel narrative mixed media works and small books of Kelda Martensen.  She produces an essential visceral arrangement of fantastical imagery and textures that have the essence to send you off into cerebral wander lust.

The trip to Dubsea would be double the pleasure to see Michael J. Olsens text based work all made in response to listening to jazz.  He created each of these works individually in a single sitting transcending the spirit of jazz through text each one fluidly rolling of his mental tongue and gaining shape and content through the clicking and clacking of his typewriter. Michael’s book ” To Listen ” Featuring the complete series of his text based work , there is a copy on hand for taking a special gander before purchase.  If you make it out to Dubsea your eyes will be as blessed as the walls they temporarily hang upon.

Kelda Martensen is an artist and educator living in Burien WA.  Kelda teaches art at Pratt Fine Art Center, Central Washington University-Pierce County, South Seattle Community College, Sev Shoon and Moshier Art Center.  Kelda received her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis and her BA from Willamette University.  She specializes in print and book arts.  Her work has been exhibited across the United States and Europe, including the 5th International Biennial of Artists Books in Vilnius Lithuania.  Additional work can be found at www.keldamartensen.com

Michael J. Olsen is a high school teacher, artist and DJ originally from Portland Oregon and now living in Burien, WA.  Michael’s current work explores the intersection of stream-of-consciousness writing, classic jazz record sleeve aesthetics, and scientific diagrams.  His radio show, Freedom Sounds, can be heard at www.freedomsoundsradio.blogspot.com

If you didn’t get the chance to stop in, Kelda & Michael’s work will be featured at Dubsea Coffee through mid-February.

Thursday | January 14, 2010 |  5:00 pm – 6:45 pm

Celebrate our 2nd month anniversary with us and watch The Never Ending Story

FREE !

The weather channel says its going to be dark & rainy tomorrow.  Come out, bring your friends, and watch a movie with your neighbors.  We’ll rearrange the pews and the chairs to make it cozy.  Whether it be your first time seeing it or your 10th, we’re sure you’ll be inspired by this tale!

It’s a story written by the late Michael Ende, who has inspired people all across the world to hold on to their imaginations and to remember that the imagination is just as important as reality.

Speaking of great imagination..

Joerael Elliott’s beautiful and soul-stirring art has graced Dubsea’s walls since day one and we are so grateful to him for sharing with us and everyone who’s walked through our doors.  It has come time for our next featured artists, Kelda Martensen & Michael J. Olsen, so his work has come down, leaving us with a big blank wall, for one night, on which to watch a movie.

Even if you can’t stay for the film, stop by and thank Joerael for sharing his work with us.  Sincere thanks to you Joerael!

On with The Never Ending Story!
